Maintaining Galvanized Square Steel in Coastal Areas

　　Galvanized steel relies on a zinc coating to sacrifice itself to protect the underlying steel. In coastal areas, the high salinity and humidity accelerate this process, sometimes depleting the zinc layer in just a few years.

　　The "White Rust" Problem

　　When zinc reacts with moisture and salt, it forms zinc hydroxide (white rust). This is porous and flaky, unlike the protective patina of weathered steel. If left unchecked, it exposes the steel to red rust.

　　Protective Coatings (The Barrier Method)

　　Galvanization alone is often insufficient in marine environments. You need a secondary barrier:

　　Powder Coating: A thermoset polymer applied electrostatically and baked. It is thicker and harder than liquid paint. Choose "marine grade" polyester or epoxy powder coats.

　　Ceramic Coatings: Nano-ceramic particles create a hydrophobic (water-repelling) layer. This prevents saltwater from sitting on the metal surface.

　　Cathodic Protection

　　For permanent structures like piers or railings, install "sacrificial anodes." These are blocks of zinc or aluminum alloy bolted to the steel. They corrode preferentially, drawing the corrosion away from the structural steel.

　　Maintenance Routine

　　Wash Down: Rinse with fresh water monthly to remove salt deposits.

　　Inspect: Look for scratches. If the scratch goes down to bare steel, touch it up immediately with a "zinc-rich" cold galvanizing spray paint (contains 96% zinc dust).

　　Avoid Contact: Do not let galvanized steel touch stainless steel or copper directly. The galvanic series will cause the zinc to corrode rapidly to protect the more noble metal. Use rubber or plastic washers to separate them.
